My porcelain veneers are too big. Can they be filed down?

My front veneers make my teeth look too big. I like the shape and the color of the veneers but they are too wide and too long. My dentist and I have had many disagreements because she insists that I approved the design, and I insist that either there was a misunderstanding or another patient’s records were crossed with mine. I have been told that the only way to fix this is for me to get new veneers. Isn’t there some way to remove my veneers and have them filed down? Monique T

Monique – Changing the width and length of your veneers will change the way they look. It is also possible that the glaze on your porcelain veneers will crack, making them more susceptible to further cracks, as well as stains. It will be difficult to shape the veneers so that they look natural.

Find an experienced cosmetic dentist and schedule an appointment to discuss your concerns. We recommend an accredited cosmetic dentist, because he or she has proven experience with the design of porcelain veneers. You will learn the results you can expect if the veneers are altered—if they can be altered. It is likely that you will need new veneers to achieve the smile that you want.
